Inscriptions師父前北斎卍翁七十五齢 屡々人のとひくるをもの憂
ことにおもひなし ひそかに深川万年橋のほとり
海辺大工町上の街上総屋といへる煙草鬻ける店(ミセ)のうらに
隠栖(カクレガ)をいとなみ 当時(イマ)の薄情なる交りを疎み 独灯火に
往昔の人を友とし 明暮其肖像を写すをもて これを
楽となすに 予此ころ倖ひ師の許にありて 稿絵(シタヱ)百員(モゝヒラ)
あまり かきやり捨給ふ毎に乞得て一巻とす 斯て閑居一
とせのほど 無用の人々亦も伝へ聞て日毎に訪ふ 季[李の誤り]
広ノ曰桃李不言下蹊(ミチ)をなすと むべなり 師父止事を得ず
ふたゝび居を他境へ移してこゝをさりぬ

天保六未年十一月のすゑ 門人 まんじ楼北鵞認おく

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
