Marks was an outstanding practitioner of chasing, a decorative technique in which detail is created on a metal surface with fine, small hammers and punches. This dish is elaborately chased with sea hollies, and such floral designs were characteristic of Marks's rich, individual style. These naturalistic designs were based upon the bold floral motifs popular in silver of the late seventeenth century.
DescriptionThe circular dish, formed of sheet, has a broad rim, a sunken center, and a thickened rim. It is chased around the border with interwing leaves and blossoms of sea holly (eryngium) and at the center with a single blossom. A few areas of high relief have been filled with solder from the back, and there are several small details, such as leaf tips applied to the front.
