ClassificationsSculpture
These three mourning figures would have been grouped below a crucifix, with the image of Christ carved in ivory and mounted on a cross, possibly made of ebony. The forceful expressiveness of posture and gesture recall monumental works of sculpture, while the intricacy of detail demonstrates the sculptor's virtuosity in carving precious ivory.
