DescriptionThe tapering cylindrical pot is formed from sheet, seamed behind the handle. The inset base has an applied molded rim. The curved spout, cast in two vertical halves, has a bell-shaped drop. The ivory handle, presumably a replacement for the original, is mounted on cast scrolled sockets opposite the spout. The hinged, domed cover, which is cast, has a baluster finial. The surface has been highly polished.

On underside, maker's mark GS (Grimwade 890) (repeated on underside of cover); leopard's head crowned; date letter V; lion passant (repeated on underside of cover).
InscriptionsARMORIALS: engraved on side, the arms of Polhill impaling Shelley, for Charles Polhill who married (about 1760) Tryphena, fifth and youngest daughter of Sir John Shelley fourth Baronet of Michaelgrove, co. Sussex.
