Description(Paris: Treuttel et Würtz, 1819) Quarto, two vols.; (v. 1) [3 ff.] 262 pp., plus 1 plate; (v. 2) 18 [of 20] bound plates; (v. 1) contemporary blue paper wrappers (dark blue cloth box); (v. 2) contemporary blue paper wrappers (dark gray cloth box).

The first French edition of the first manual by the inventor of lithography, originally published in Munich in 1818. According to Twyman (Lithography 1800-1850, p. 107), the plates in the this edition were printed in Paris by Kuntz "under Senefelder's own supervision." Several are signed, by Clement Senefelder, Electrine Stunz, N. H. Jacob, and Ant. Falger. This copy lacks plates 12 & 13.

MFA owns another copy of the entire book (64.756, lacking one plate) and a copy of the plate section only (KBR711--complete).

NOTE:
Koehler was the first Print Curator at the MFA and served from 1887 until his death in 1900. He deposited the majority of his collection at the MFA in 1895-1896. The gift of Koehler's collection was accepted by the Trustees of the MFA on October 20, 1898.
