This large abstract ring by Claire Falkenstein stands on its own and looks like a figure with a blue marble-like head. Its right arm is extended, as if gesturing to stop or throwing a punch. Falkenstein began working in glass during a trip to Venice in 1954. She subsequently became known for her large glass and metal sculptures, but she also experimented with the same materials and techniques to make smaller-scaled jewelry. She was among the first to utilize the ideas of abstract expressionism in jewelry. In her wearable sculpture, Falkenstein not only explored the connection between matter and space but also how the piece could be comfortably worn on the body.
