DescriptionSide chair with carved and molded shield-shaped back; above a rosette segment rises a medial splat with pedestal, vase, and wheat-ears, carved in relief, flanked by two curving bars crossed with drapery forms festooned; square, tapering front legs with spade feet carved with string of pendent flowers on face of legs; spade feet are applied mahogany; seat rails of ash and birch; seat upholstered over the rail.
ProvenanceOwned originally by Elias Hasket Derby (1739-1799) of Salem, Massachusetts; purchased in Salem for the Karolik Collection from Charles Buckham(?) from estate of Mrs. William C. West; given to the Museum as part of the M. and M. Karolik Collection of Eighteenth-Century American Arts in 1939..
