John Coney produced at least seventeen caudle cups during his career. Of these, twelve were made for churches, including this set of four made for the church in Malden, Massachusetts, attesting to the adaptation of this domestic form for liturgical use.

DescriptionRaised, plain, gourd-shaped vessel with flaring rim, flanked by two cast, scrolled handles. Repair to one handle at three points with solder visible; tears in metal visible from inside of cup.

Marked "I C" over a fleur-de-lis within a heart-shaped punch, on base near center point and on body between handles.
InscriptionsEngraved in shaded roman letters "M : Church plate." on base below center point.
