John Coney produced at least seventeen caudle cups during his career. Of these, twelve were made for churches, including this set of four made for the church in Malden, Massachusetts, attesting to the adaptation of this domestic form for liturgical use.

DescriptionCup is a raised, plain, gourd-shaped vessel with flaring rim, flanked by two cast scrolled handles.
Marks
Marked twice "IC" with an annulet between, over a fleur-de-lis, within a heart-shaped punch, once on base at center, and once on body between handles, below rim.
InscriptionsIn shaded roman letters, engraved "M : C : Plate." on base above center point.
