This candle stand, unusual in being both signed and dated, is a rare example of a lighting device found in many eighteenth-century homes. Gerrish was a Boston gunsmith with the metalworking skills necessary to create this stand fitted with brass candle cups, finial, and a ferrule (a ring around the slender shaft to strengthen it).
