Turners made large quantities of stretchers (braces between the legs of chairs). Several regions developed and maintained recognizable patterns of balls, rings, and blocks. The patterns on this chair-the central swollen baluster with tapered ends on the front and back and the block-and-spindle stretchers on the sides-were common in Massachusetts.
