DescriptionThis Proto-Attic vase – a hybrid shape of a loutrophoros and a hydria (with two handles on the shoulders and one vertical handle in the rear) – features women wearing black, sleeveless garments processing around the neck, with arms raised to pull at their hair in a mourning gesture. Three friezes on the belly feature animals. The shoulder frieze is populated by felines (lions and panthers), the middle frieze is populated by boars, lions and a goat, and the lower frieze by swans. The rosettes strewn within the field are an adoption of the Corinthian practice.
