DescriptionBlack clay, polished surface. Thin canteen-shaped body, groove in edge, holes in edge for hanging near the small mouth.Incised on each side, a fantastic bird, facing right, surrounded by running loops. Inscription over each bird, and on neck or lip of vase.
Provenance1895/1896: excavated at the necropolis at Poggio Somavilla by Fausto Benedetti (said to have been found in Sabine territory by F. Benedetti (Tomb III of Benedetti excavations of 1896); according to G. Rocca: found in 1895 by F. Benedetti in the necropolis of Poggio Sommavilla); sold to Michal Tyszkiewicz, Paris; by 1901: with Edward Perry Warren (according to Warren's records: Found in Sabine territory by F. Benedetti, whose father sold it to Tyszkiewicz, the rest of the tomb going to Copenhagen. It was sold in the Tyszkiewicz sale [Hotel des Commissaires-Priseurs, 9 rue Drouot, Paris, June 8-10, 1898], but did not appear in the catalogue); purchased by MFA from Edward Perry Warren, December 1901
