DescriptionLarge bed curtain of glazed chintz with cream-colored ground (originally white) with design painted in polychrome with reds and blues predominating; most of curtain filled with large-scale design of slender scrolling branches bearing flowers, buds, curling leaves, insects and decorative birds in interspaces; deep border design of rocky landscape with many kinds of wild animals pursued by dogs and hunters and shepherds with their flocks; lined with pale blue Chinese damask in small-scale all-over design of flowering apple branches, birds and insects; three edges bound with white cotton tape.
ProvenanceProbably late 17th century, Earls of Ashburnhamm Ashburnham Place, Battle, Sussex; 1924, by inheritance to Lady Catherine Ashburnham (b. 1890 - d. 1953), Ashburnham Place; July 7-9, 1953, Lady Ashburnham estate sale, Sotheby's, London (sale held on premises). 1953, sold by David Stockwell, Wilmington, DE and Philadelphia, to the MFA.
