DescriptionSome scholars suggest this may the be portrait of Washington reputed to be included in Noah Webster, An American selection of lessons in reading and speaking. 3rd. edition (Philadelphia: Printed and sold by Young and M'Culloch, at the corner of Second and Chesnut-Streets., M.DCC.LXXXVII. [1787]), [Evans 20862]. As of 1958, however, that portrait was still described as a ghost, and untraced, by Emily Skeel, A Bibliography of the Writings of Noah Webster (New York: New York Public Library, 1958): 165.
An early note by Sylvester Koehler, in graphite, clipped and affixed to the mat, reads: Engr by Trenchard / after Chas. Willson Peale's original drawing / Mr Hart says this is easily worth $100. -- / He knows of only 2 others. Publ. 1787. Originally / publ. in Scarce Noah Webster's Spelling Book. K. / Baker's Engr. Portraits of Washington , p. 31, No. 38. [sic, though Koehler probably means 28]
