Bottom left, in plate: Sabinus commanded a small army in Gaul and declared himself Emperor on the death of Vitellius; he was soon after defeated by Vespasian's general and compelled to seek safety in caverns. In this situation he remained nine years attended by his faithful wife Epponina, who supplied him with provisions. She was at length discovered in the performance of that pious office, and Sabinus taken and carried to Rome. Epponina accompanied him and appeared before the Emperor, with her two children, to implore her husband's pardon, but neither her tears nor intreaties could prevail, and Sabinus suffered by the executioner.

Elle fut enfin decouverte faisant cet office pieux, et Sabinus fut prit et conduit a Rome. Epponine se presenta avec ses deux enfans devant l'Empéreur, et l'impora de pardonner son mari; mais ni ses larmès ni ses supplicatiens ne parent l'attendrier et il fut envoyé au supplice.

NOTE:
Koehler was the first Print Curator at the MFA and served from 1887 until his death in 1900. He deposited the majority of his collection at the MFA in 1895-1896. The gift of Koehler's collection was accepted by the Trustees of the MFA on October 20, 1898.
