DescriptionPrinted and published by F. W. Reuter, Berlin. This was to be number one in a new series, Polyautographische Zeichnungen der vorzüglichsten Europäischen Künstler unseres Zeitalters (Polyautographic Drawings by the Most Outstanding European Artists of Our Time), the never-issued successor to Reuter's 1805 series Polyautographische Zeichnungen vorzüglicher Berliner Künstler (Polyautographic Drawings by Outstanding Berlin Artists). Hero and Leander were legendary lovers of antiquity separated by the waters of the Hellespont. Leander regularly swam the waters by night to visit his lover, but on one such occasion, drowned. . This early lithograph is notable for the way in which it looks back to woodcut and to etching and engraving for its graphic vocabulary.
