Made in Groningen this brandy bowl is one of the earliest known from that region, where the silversmiths specialized in making six-sided bowls. Each of the six lobes is engraved with a cartouche of C-scrolls surrounding an allegorical figure, Faith, Hope and Charity along one side, and Strength, Justice, and Moderation along the other, separated by foliate motifs.

DescriptionThis splendid bowl is one of the earliest known Groningen brandy bowls. Each of the bowl’s six lobed panels is engraved with a cartouche composed of C-shaped scrolls containing an allegorical image -faith, hope and charity on one side, and strength, justice and moderation on the other - with foliate motifs between them. The engraving on the large and heavy bowl is very fine and detailed. This is particularly evident in the rendition of the shadows on the garments. The engraving is in excellent condition. The bowl stands on a cast, scalloped stem and foot. The foot is decorated with alternating bunches of fruit and winged cherub's heads. The two cast horizontal handles are composed of C-shaped scrolls with a mascaron around a convex medallion, on which the initials I.H. and H.H. are engraved. Each of the heavy, high relief handles is supported by a cast cherub’s head.
