This elaborately designed periodical, published in Germany between 1895-1900, strongly influenced contemporary international print culture during its active years of publication, and its impact remains evident today. At the time of publication the periodical was an important vehicle for the dissemination of what the editors considered the best in contemporary art and literature, featuring current fiction and poetry alongside original contemporary prints in each issue. In addition to promoting works by established progressive artists in continental Europe, England and the United States, the editors of PAN were also strongly committed in their support of young or emerging artists and designers, including Käthe Kollwitz, Bernhard Pankok, William Rothenstein and Emil Orlik, to name but a few.
