The classically inspired lyre-back armchair is very close to the hand of Thomas Chippendale, noted cabinetmaker and designer. Associated with his well-documented commission for the library of Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, this armchair speaks to the way English interior designers and furniture makers turned to Ancient sources for inspiration in the last quarter of the 18th century.
