Payson (b. 1907 – d. 1984), Boston; 1952, sold by Payson to Childs Gallery, Boston; 1952, sold by Childs Gallery to Thomas McCormick (b. 1925 – d. 2019), Princeton, NJ and Brookline, MA; gift of Thomas McCormick to his wife, Margaret McCormick (b. 1924 – d. 2020), Brookline; 2020, bequest of Margaret McCormick to her children, Sarah M. [1] This is one of four evangelist portraits from the same Bible, which were owned by Daguerre in the early twentieth century and were later purchased by Bourgeois Galleries. The others are at the Montreal Museum of Art (Saint Mark), McGill University Redpath Library (Saint John), and the MFA (Saint Luke, accession no. 19.118).
