Cambridge-based artist Lucy Kim created Longing Pairs (Sketch) as part of a larger series called “Beach Cast Paintings.” Kim fashioned these works from casts she made of the shoreline as the tide goes out to sea. Her paintings capture the dynamic shape of ocean waves by permanently fixing the elusive impression they make in sand. The undulating surface of Longing Pairs disrupts the legibility of the work’s painted imagery, distorting the appearance of its subject: two pairs of crossed legs lounging side-by-side.
