DescriptionIn the extreme foreground, right of center, a small rose bush, flanked by a pair of rabbits, sends blossom-laden branches up into the field. A great acanthus-like plant rises immediately behind the rose bush and fills the area of the field with giant leaves. Two snails and a number of birds with brilliant plumage perch on the giant leaves or on the flower stalks. The border shows rich bouquets of fruits and flowers set into thick laurel ropes, all against a red background.
Provenance1917, gift of Denman Waldo Ross (b. 1853 - d. 1935), Cambridge, MA, to the MFA. (Accession Date: February 15, 1917)
