Commander Dewey's great naval battle May 1, 1898, between the United States Asiatic Squadron of six war ships against eleven Spanish war ships under cover of a murderous fire from the Manila forts. The battle was like a volcanic hell. American loss - no ships, none killed and but few wounded. Spanish loss - forts demolished, eleven war ships completely destroyed, eight captured, 300 killed and 400 wounded.
