RUTHERFORD B. HAYES was born at Delaware, Ohio on Oct. 4, 1822. He was the Republican nominee, but his selection for the Presidency was due to Congressional action, the election at large being indecisive and the choice left to the national legislature, which in the end turned the matter over to a special commission which selected him by a party vote of 8 to 7. He died March 8, 1881.
