JAMES MONROE, fifth President of the U. S. Served two terms - from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1821 and from March 5, 1821 to March 3, 1825.


JAMES MONROE was born in Virginia on April 28, 1758. He was elected by a large majority by the Republican party which at this time changed its name to Democratic. On his re-election he received 231 of the 232 electoral votes. He promulgated the famous "Monroe Doctrine." He died July 4, 1831
