Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty, K.C.B., M.V.O., D.S.O., H.M.S. "Lion." Commander of the First Battle Cruiser Squadron, won distinction and early promotion by his services with the Nile gunboats in 1898, and two years later for gallantry in China. After reaching flag rank at the age of 39, he was appointed Naval Secretary to the First Lord. Was in commmand of the successful action at Heligoland Bight on August 28th, 1914, and at the Naval victory in the North Sea on January 24th, 1915, when the German Battle-Cruiser Bluecher was sunk.
