This photograph – “Torito, Coyoacán, Ciudad de México” – is by Graciela Iturbide (born 1942), one of Latin America’s most important and influential photographers today. Her photographs capture Mexican everyday life and its cultures, rituals, and religion. They tell a visual story of Mexico since the late 1970s – a country in constant transition defined by tensions between urban and rural life and indigenous and modern life. This early photograph taken in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City, where the artist lives, is a surprising image of a horned bull’s head mounted on the front of a bicycle, showing her ability to capture a surreal moment in time, while bringing forth drama and mystery.
ProvenanceBy 2000, from the artist, Graciela Iturbide, Mexico City, to Galería López Quiroga, Mexico City; 2022, sold by Galería López Quiroga to the MFA. (Accession Date: April 20, 2022)
