In the foreground is the Minnetonka, Northern Pacific Railway's first locomotive as it appeared in "Wheels A-Rolling," Chicago Railroad Fair pageant of transportation progress. The Minnetonka, built in 1870, is 27 1/2 feet long, 10 feet 2 inches high, weighs 12 tons and costs $6,700. In comparison, the new 4500 H.P. Diesel locomotives which power the streamlined North Coast Limited are 151 feet 4 inches long, 15 feet high, weigh 345 tons and cost $458,000. The headend of one of the Deisels is shown in the background.
