NOTES:
[1] “Property of J. S. Lawson – Emmanuel College – Toronto, Ont.” is inscribed on the remains of the original stretcher on the reverse of the painting. Reverend James Sharp Lawson was a graduate and later a staff member of Emmanuel College, University of Toronto, where he held various teaching and library positions from 1932 until at least 1957. Rev. Lawson collected paintings by Canadian artists beginning in the late 1920s or early 1930s.
