Gehilfe Pietro Peruginos in Perugia. In Florenz seit 1504 unter dem Einflusse Leonard's und Fra Bartolommeos, tätig in Urbino, Perugia und Florenz, seit 1508 in Rom. Haupt der römischen Malerschule. Neben Michelangelo der genialste Künstler der Renaissance.
