ProvenanceSaid to come from the Basilique Saint-Maurice et Saint-Goëry, Épinal, France; about 1789/1799, during the French Revolution, said to have been removed from the church [see note 1]. Said to have belonged to the Architecte Departemental des Vosges, possibly meaning Léon Charles Grillot (b. 1827 - d. 1898) or Fraçois Clasquin (b. 1849 - d. 1917), Épinal [see note 2]. By 1917, sold by M. Daguerre Bordeaux and Paris, to Demotte, Paris and New York [see note 3]; 1919, sold by Demotte to the MFA for $30000. (Accession Date: February 13, 1919)

NOTES:
[1] According to an attestation from the dealer John Vigouroux of Demotte (March 17, 1939). The work was sold to the MFA in 1919 as having come from the cathedral of Épinal. [2] According to John Vigouroux of Demotte (letter of January 13, 1918). The work was exhibited by Demotte as coming from the "Pigueret Collection," which cannot be verified. [3] According to correspondence from Vigouroux in 1939, M. Daguerre was a painter from Bordeaux who resided in Paris (Villa des Ternes) and had a private collection.
