Britannia Rules the Waves! The English Commanders Blake and Monk completely defeated the Dutch, under Van Tromp, in 1653, and captured the broom which Van Tromp had hoisted to signify that he would sweep the seas. We have retained it ever since and to-day still SWEEP THE SEAS.
