WILLIAM PENN: born in England, 1644; died there, 1718; became a preacher of the Friends in 1668; received the grant of Pennsylvania, 1681; came to America in 1682 and founded Philadelphia; deprived of the government of Pennsylvania in 1692 on the suspicion of intriguing to restore James II, but was restored two years later.
