DescriptionHat; brown chenille and taupe/brown embroidered cloche. Brown woven fabric base is covered with various chenille and embroidered details. Looped and twisted taupe thread is stitched on ground. Irregular shaped designs at top of crown are filled with lengths of brown chenille, accented by orange chenille. Offset diamond shaped border is filled with dark and light brown chenille. Lower edge of crown, extending on to brim, is decorated with twisted or rolled strands of brown thread in an irregular shaped pattern. Narrow brown grosgrain ribbon at the base of the crown forms a small bow on the proper right front. Brim is one inch in center front, decreasing to 1/4 inch in center back. The hat is lined in peach silk. Bought at the Maine Estate Auction where Alexis Roy had lived in Fairfield, Maine. Maine was hit by the worst ice storm in a century and the auction went on with the help of flashlights considering bidders came from far and wide to see the vast and wholesome collection. This collection contained the "buy Lowell Goods hat" and the ATHM had an exhibition in 1999 called "Hats Off".
