As Dutch flower painting developed through the 17th century and into the 18th, the arrangements went from tight and compact to abundant and untidy. Colors became more saturated. Dark backgrounds and shafts of light added drama. But what stayed the same was the appeal of certain varieties, such as striped tulips. Little is known of Jacob van Walscapelle, though his still lifes seem influenced by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, whose work hangs nearby.
