ProvenancePossibly in the 18th century collection of Prince Christian August von Waldeck (b. 1744) Arolsen, Germany [see note 1]. Henri Heilbronner, Lucerne, Switzerland; 1959, sold by Heilbronner to the MFA for $500. [see note 2] (Accession date: September 17, 1959)

[1] According to a September 17, 1959 acquisition recommendation from Hanns Swarzenski. Prince von Waldeck was a general in Austria who traveled extensively in Italy, (see also Heinrich Duntzer's 1883, "Life of Goethe", pg. 20)
