César (who used only his first name), first studied sculpture with a stonecutter who had worked for Rodin. Upon moving to Paris in the 1930s, he became entranced with the untraditional materials-such as scrap iron and wire-that sculptors were beginning to use. One of a series of "compressions" he exhibited in 1960, Moteur #1 is a selection of automobile parts that César crushed and arranged on a base.
