This imposing object presents the muscular and suffering body of Christ on the cross. Exaggerated veins and dripping blood and a very symmetrical, frontal presentation of the body of Christ make for an especially pathetic image. The white ivory stands out against the black ebony of the cross, and the base includes the skull and bones that refer back to the biblical figure of Adam. Gilt bronze mounts punctuate these precious materials, making for a lavish whole.

ProvenanceThe Chigi-Albani family, Rome [see note 1]. By 1971, consigned by Artibus, London to Heim Gallery, London; 1972, sold by Heim Gallery to Randolph J. Fuller, Boston; 1973, gift of Randolph J. Fuller to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 10, 1973)
