DescriptionThe cylindrical tankard rests on a molded foot. Plain gilt bands around the rim and foot of the body enclose a white sleeve that is pierced and chased with naturalistic birds and foliage; the gilt lining shows through the piercing. The slightly domed cover consists of a white sleeve, pierced and chased with flowers, over a gilt substructure. The S-shaped handle is modeled with auricular motifs incorporating a claw. The thumbpiece is in the form of a tripartite scroll. The tankard and cover are assembled from six pieces. The body of the vessel is a straight-sided cup. Two wire moldings are applied to the upper border. The pierced and embossed sleeve covering the body is formed from two sheets, seamed under the handle and at the front, slipped over the cylindrical body, and secured by the foot. The foot is a separate raised disk bolted to the body. The gilt cover is raised; the embossed and pierced sleeve is bolted through the center. Five small holes around the edge of the cover may originally have served to align and secure the sleeve. The sleeve has been extensively repaired; patches strengthen the underside of each thin join. The rim is formed by a wire soldered to the underside of the edges of the flowers. The handle is cast in two pieces and bolted to the body.
