DescriptionThe tray is oval with a slight depression and rests on four flattened bun feet. At the center of the tray is an oval panel embossed with a scene of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, drawing his bow on the centaur Nessus, who carries away Deianira. The oval panel is enclosed by a band of laurel. The broad pierced border of the tray is embossed with naturalistically rendered flowers, including tulips, poppies, and lilies. The outer edge of the tray incorporates auricular motifs in low relief and flat-chased bubbles and waves. The two open handles are modeled with auricular and foliate motifs incorporating grotesque faces. The body of the tray is formed from a single sheet, raised, embossed, chased, and pierced. The rim is strengthened by a thick round wire applied under the edge. The central relief panel is embossed and chased and secured on the back with four nuts. The front and back faces of the handles are cast separately and soldered together. The curved back of the tray is strengthened by two scrolled brackets under the handles. The mushroom-shaped feet are assembled from two formed pieces.
