DescriptionThe base of the box is oval in section with bombé sides; the removable cover is domed, with a crimped rim and an interior bezel. The box rests on four scroll feet and is embossed and chased with shells and acanthus leaves against a matted ground. The cover is similarly decorated, with a handle formed of coiling tendrils enclosing a salamander. The body and the cover are each raised, embossed, and chased. The feet are cast; two have been repaired. The handle is composed of a coiled wire; the salamander in the center is cast. The gilding has been renewed.
