Ashbee, one of the prime exponents of the Arts and Crafts movement, founded the Guild of Handicraft with the humanist intent to provide workers with education, skills, and pride in artistic craftsmanship. As chief designer, Ashbee encouraged craftsmen to interpret and vary basic designs; all versions of this model, for example, have different detailing in the enameling and in the prominent wirework finial.
DescriptionThe raised circular bowl has a trumpet foot. The wide looping handles on each side of the bowl are each formed of two wires. The circular detachable cover, formed from sheet, has a flat rim and a central disk of bright blue enamel set into a silver bezel. The finial is formed of six wires bent and soldered to form a cage that supports a pearl in a silver bezel.
