DescriptionThe oval tureen rests on four feet modeled as couchant lions that are cast and seamed vertically. The vessel has a bombé body with chased vertical fluting in alternating panels. It is formed of raised sheet, chased around the base, with a second raised section applied to form the incurved rim. The domed cover is similarly fluted, with a horizontal band of chased gadrooning, a cast gadrooned border forming the rim and a finial of cast and chased artichokes. The handles, each cast in two pieces, are in the form of winged griffins. The surfaces of the tureen and cover are engraved and chased overall with a fine pattern of shells and clusters of vegetables against a diaper ground. There have been substantial repairs to the base of the tureen.
