DescriptionWalnut. Octagonal seat inlaid with ivory rosette and four lozenges of light wood, box-like compartment beneath, heavily molded. Shaped panels, turned stretcher between, form legs; front panel carved with acanthus leaves and dentil band across base. Two circular bosses on front. Flaring back has three upright molded strips, carved crest with rosettes in circulars at ends, guilloche band above and low inlaid strip with GT and DC flanking inlaid eagle. Three turned button-like finials.
ProvenanceDr. Albert Figdor (b. 1843 - d. 1927), Vienna; June 11-15, 1930, posthumous Figdor sale, Cassirer, Berlin, lot 633, sold for M 5300, probably to Eugene L. Garbáty (b. 1880 - d. 1966), Schloss Alt-Döbern, Niederlausitz (Germany), New York, and East Norwalk, CT [see note 1]; 1953, sold by Garbáty to the MFA for $500. (Accession Date: December 29, 1953)

[1] Eugene Garbáty purchased other works of Italian Renaissance furniture at the Figdor sale, as for example MFA accession nos. 54.1114 (Cassone) and 60.178 (Folding Chair). Garbáty emigrated from Berlin to New York between 1938 and 1939, bringing much of his art collection with him.
