Prized for its warm white color, precious ivory was a favored material for small sculptures in Europe across the centuries. Here, a sense of pathos is conveyed by the presentation of the body of the dead Christ. His head is supported with tender care by a quietly grieving figure of an angel.

DescriptionChrist Comforted by an Angel (Imago Pietatis). Standing figure of Angel, behind seated Dying Christ. Angel holds Christ's head with right hand and supports body with left hand; wears draped robes and mantle; angel's proper left leg (loose in socket) rests on angular seat. Christ, clothed in loin cloth; open-mouthed, bearded, seated on draped robe.
