DescriptionThe teapot is of globular shape with a short, straight spout and a polygonal handle. The body of the teapot is molded with vertical ribbing, which is divided into three horizontal registers: one defining the shoulder, one the midsection, and one the area above the foot. The spout and cover are also ribbed. The domed cover has a gently flaring rim and a finial in the form of a lion. The finial might also include a cub, but the rudimentary modeling makes this difficult to ascertain. A small hole directly beneath the lion allows for the escape of steam. The foot ring is echoed by a rim atop the shoulder, which supports the cover. The body of the pot is decorated with four leaf-shaped reserves, each outlined in red and blue and containing similar Imari-style flowers. Large flowers occupying the lower portion of the reserve have yellow centers, manganese purple petals with red outlining, and blue foliage and stems with red tendrils; they grow out of manganese purple rock work edged with blue moss. Clusters of long-stemmed, daisy-like flowers with yellow centers and blue petals grow from the top of the rock work. Small areas of red paint amongst these flowers suggest butterflies. A small chrysanthemum-shaped decoration in blue is painted in the lower left of each reserve. Between the reserves, parallel blue lines against a mottled green ground follow the contours of the leaves from beneath the shoulder rim to the lower half of the pot. A blue-edged, almond-shaped ornament painted with red scales is placed atop the line decoration and above the handle and spout. A short, pale blue band decorated with dark blue scrolls and bordered with white joins adjacent reserves. Beneath the band a large flower with a yellow center and manganese purple petals lined with red is centered on the mottled green ground, which is produced by the application of yellow pigment over cobalt blue. The spout and handle are both pale blue with dark blue scrolls and angled lines. A line of blue chevrons has been applied to the foot ring. The cover is painted with two leaf-shaped reserves. A single flower similar to the two large flowers of the lower reserves fills the white ground of both leaves. Yellow and manganese purple flowers against a mottled green ground with blue reticulation decorate the remainder of the cover. The lion is painted in blue, with white racial features outlined in red. The flared rim of the cover and the shoulder rim are decorated with a pattern of small red chevrons with blue lines above those on the cover and below those on the shoulder rim.
