DescriptionThe molded snuffbox is oval in section, with straight sides and a flat base. It is modeled in low relief with six rocaille cartouches: one on the cover, one on the base, and four around the sides. The irregular areas between the rocaille frames and the edges of the boxes are filled with puce scale painting. The slightly domed cover is painted with a hen and two chicks in black, brown, and brownish red. They stand on a patch of ground painted in yellow, brown, dark green, and purple. In the background 's a building with orange roofs. The reserves on the sides and base are painted in naturalistic colors with groups of birds perched on branches or standing in an abbreviated landscape. The interior of the oval cover is decorated with a cluck, a hen, and two doves, painted in reddish brown, yellow, puce, and orange. They stand on a patch of ground that is mainly yellow, and beyond is a landscape with dark green trees and an orange roofed building. The box is mounted with a hinged gilt-metal rim that has a shaped thumbpiece and is chased with flowers and scrolls. The interior edge of the mount has a wavy rim.
