DescriptionThe pear-shaped jug has a wishbone handle and a low, plain foot ring. Both the handle and the spout have molded and gilt scrollwork. The jug is painted with a turquoise ground with two white quatrefoil reserves outlined in brown and gold. The foot and rim of the jug are also edged in gold. One scene on the jug shows two men, one in a puce coat and tricorn hat, the other in oriental dress, standing at the edge of the shore. In the center foreground, a man sits in front of a group of barrels, and another man is seated in the middle ground. There are three boats in the harbor and on the right a building on an outcrop of land. In the other reserve, two men and a woman stand in front of a cliff in the left foreground looking at a building on the far side of a river. The figures are painted in puce, yellow, brown, and iron-red. A pollarded tree frames the left side of the scene. The flat cover, which does not match the jug, has an applied floral finial painted in blue and yellow, with a green stem and leaves and a gilt rim. The cover is white and is painted with two male figures, each standing in an abbreviated landscape.
