DescriptionThe brown stoneware tankard was thrown and is cylindrical in shape, with turned moldings at the rim and foot. The scroll handle is molded in two pieces with a ribbed spine. The cover is in the form of a stepped, flattened dome. The body of the tankard is decorated with wheel-cut vertical bands that are alternately plain and faceted with a scale pattern emanating from a central notched oval. This treatment is continued on the cover but stops short of the plain circular field at the center. The exterior and half the interior of the tankard are polished. The cover is hinged with a silver-gilt mount; the cast thumbpiece is in the form of a satyr's head. The hinge itself is secured with a screw terminating in two florets, and the sleeve encasing the top of the handle is chased and engraved with a scroll pattern against a stippled ground. The foot of the tankard is mounted with a silver-gilt band that has cut, engraved dentils bent over the foot rim.
